OUR STORY

Our story of Opplett began in a classroom at Amalie Skram High School, back in 2018. The four of us were grouped together and tasked with starting our own youth enterprise as part of an entrepreneurship class. We spent time deciding on a product to sell and a business model that would be feasible.

From the beginning, sustainability and addressing the needs of our city, Bergen, were central. We started collecting returned and surplus rain gear that would otherwise have been discarded, with the idea of redesigning them into waterproof tote bags. This way, we could create a product that met the need for keeping everyday belongings dry in Bergen’s rainy weather while also offering a sustainable alternative to mass-produced tote bags and carriers. By regularly visiting companies like XXL to collect returned rain gear and by collaborating with local vocational rehabilitation businesses like ALF and Nordnes Verksteder, the Opplett bags evolved from an idea into finished products ready for sale.

When the Opplett bags proved to be a great success, we decided to take the next step and established Opplett as a company in 2019.

It has been fantastic to collaborate with this great team. This is truly a win-win situation and a reduction of waste. It is very rewarding to see that reuse and sustainability make a difference.

OUR GOAL

Today, we are still the same team with the same concept. By sourcing surplus materials, rainwear, and scraps of waterproof fabric, we redesign and sew them into waterproof tote bags. We now collaborate with an increasing number of collaborators, allowing us to produce even more bags and continuously develop new models to expand our range of waterproof tote bags. Our bags are currently sold in person at the vintage store ØY in Bergen, as well as on our website. While the future remains uncertain, we are confident in our vision to continue offering waterproof products by transforming waste into reusable bags.
